Panama, February 21, 2026. The historic sculpture of Liberador Simón Bolívar will receive a preventive conservation process and will be re-located in a new strategic space at the entrance of the city of Colón as part of the actions to rescue the historic and cultural heritage advanced by the Panamanian State.
The project takes place as a result of joint work between the Bolivarian Society, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, institutions that coordinate efforts to restore visibility and dignity to this important historic symbol.
The sculpture was originally located at Colón's November 5 Park. Nevertheless, during the site's restoration work, the monument was dismantled and moved to a town cellar, where it remained secure from 2016.
On the occasion of the commemoration of the Anifictionic Congress and the celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the town, the Minister of Culture, María Eugenia Herrera intended to start an integral process for its recovery, conservation and subsequent re-installation at a point of greater urban visibility.
The project includes two main phases, as is the construction of the new pedestal, where CMC, under the guidance and supervision of Joel Coras, director of the historic centre of the town of Colón, began work to prepare the base that will hold the monument at the entrance of the town, enabling the figure of the Liberador to have more presence and accessibility for residents and visitors.
The statue was moved to the Center of Art and Culture of Colón, where it receives specialized cleaning, maintenance and restoration work by the restaurador Alejandro Alvarez, specialist at the National Museums Management.
The whole process is financed by the Ministry of Culture, through the National Museums Directorate, run by Raúl Castro, from where technical and professional accompaniment are provided to ensure the proper recovery of the monument.
The authorities emphasized that this intervention aims at preserving the historic value of the work, strengthening the colonist identity and promoting respect for the country's property.
