The Ministry of Culture (MiCultura) jointly with the Andrés Bello Convention (CAB) launched the Panama Cultural Satellite Account, a tool that will serve to quantify the contribution that culture offers to the national economy.

That's the first time that this type of measurement will be made in Panama, as it will give an actual data of the contribution that each of the cultural sectors affects economic development and an example of the economic impact of carnival 2024 of Las Tablas, Province of Los Santos.

"It's a great tool that we're leaving with Panama, and we're forced to have far more profound information about challenges and opportunities we have," said Minister of Culture Giselle González Villarrué.

The head of the cultural portfolio added that "this system will help us to define key Roadmaps so as to be able to determine effective and sound public policies to strengthen the cultural ecosystem,"

During the launch of the Satellite Account, it was reported that this is a technological tool that has already been used in most countries of the region.

On the carnival of Las Tablas, Liliana Ortiz, a consultant for Creative Economics and Catherine Bateman, an expert on Cultural Heritage issues at the Andres Bello Convention in a presentation held with figures that the carnival of the city of Las Tablas in 2024 generated a commercial movement of about 9.4 million dollars, which according to studies for every dollar invested were generated 10.5 dollars.

It's important that all national artistic trade unions and people from the cultural ecosystem contribute to the sustainability of the Satellite Account and thus be able to create new public policies to strengthen Panamanian culture, leading to better management of resources for culture.
