The Permanent Delegation of Panama to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as an observer, participates in the forty-fourth and extended year meeting of the Committee on World Heritage, held at Fuzhou, China, up to 31 July 2021.

The meeting will serve as an online review of today's and outstanding 2020 issues as a result of covid-19 and will have among its issues the conservation status of 255 registered sites and 42 nominations to the World Heritage List.

The Panamanian representation includes the permanent delegate to the UNESCO, Elia Del Carmen Guerra, and Dr. Katti OSorio as a Focal Point with his deputy director of Cultural Heritage, Itzela Quiros and Rafael Holness from the Ministry of Culture and specialist personnel from the Ministry of the Environment.

For Katti OSorio, an advisor to the Ministry of Culture at this session will be attending to the reports of Panama about the State of Conservation of Cultural World Heritage "Fortificaciones de la Costa Caribeña de Panama: Portobelo and San Lorenzo," and the "Archaeological Site of Old Panama and the Historic District of Panama."

In a note sent by the UNESCO, 42 nominations for the World Heritage List will be reviewed, including 24 submitted by 2020 and 18 submitted by 2021. They include 35 cultural sites, 6 natural and 1 mixed (both cultural and natural).

The Committee will discuss in particular the status of retention of 255 sites already listed for World Heritage, 53 of which are also listed for World Heritage at Danger.

Panama forms a party to the 1972 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Cultural and Natural World Heritage.

The World Heritage Committee has listed 1,121 sites in 167 countries as World Heritage.
