Panama, May 21, 2026 The Ministry of Culture held an official event of accreditation of new members for the institutional reactivation of the Panamanian Academy of History, marking a new stage for this scientific corporation dedicated to the study, conservation and dissemination of national historic memory.

The ceremony, held at the executive hall of the Ministry of Culture, was headed by the Minister of Culture, María Eugenia Herrera, with the historian Dr. Omar Jaén Suárez and outstanding figures from the academic and intellectual sphere of the country.

During her intervention, Minister Herrera emphasized the cultural and national significance of this process, noting that the reactivation of the Academy guarantees that "history is an essential pillar of our identity and our culture."

The incumbent of Culture explained that this reorganization, supported by Executive Decree No. 3 of 2026, returns strength and institutional life to an entity called to safeguard and project the historic memory of Panama. He also recognized the trajectory and inputs of figures such as Dr. Omar Jaén Suárez as well as those who have been keeping the institution alive "from thought and written word."

The event was held in the context of the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Anifictionic Congress of Panama, a date that recalls the leading role of the country as a place of political and historic meeting of America.

The new members have been formally accredited and have been signed and have been officially established by the Panamanian Academy of History. The new accredited members are doctors Patricia Pizzurno, Celestino Andrés Araúz, Oscar Varga Velarde, Carlos Cuesta Gómez, Stanley Heckadon Moreno, Ana Elena Porras, Mario Molina Castillo and Alfredo Figueroa Navarro.

The Panamanian Academy of History was founded on May 16, 1921 and remained without operations for the last 40 years and its reactivation represents an important step to strengthen historic research and preserve national memory.

The Minister of Culture congratulated the accredited members and the new directive and called them to maintain a management guided by truth, intellectual dignity and continuous work for the rescue of our cultural heritage.
