Panama, 18 December 2025. - The Panamanian documentary "Son of Tiger and Mula" earned the Special Jury Award at the New Latin American Cinema Festival 2025 in Havana, Cuba, in the category of Documentary Longfilm. That paper, winner of the 2015 Fondo Cine National Competition, was directed by filmmaker Annie Canavaggio.

"Son of Tiger and Mula" is a work that tells the story after the negotiations of the Torrio-Carter Treaties of 1977, that allowed Panama to gain control of the Canal and its full territorial sovereignty. The film uses 16mm film archives, unpublished, and historic photographs from the 1970s.

It also includes testimony and interviews with negotiators such as Aristides Royo and Adolfo Ahumada. To sum up, it offers an intimate vision of General Omar Torrijos Herrera, exploring his international diplomacy and intrigue to achieve an agreement.

The film focuses on the figure of Torrijos, who ruled Panama from 1968 to 1981 and to whom Gabriel García Márquez described with the words that are listed in the title: "Severish as the tiger and stubborn as the mule."

It had its official premiere at Panama's cinemas on March 13, 2025, and at that time it was reported that the tape reached first place at a box office in Panama, with an outstanding reception at an audience of all ages.
