The Ministry of Culture (MiCultura), together with the Embassy of Japan in Panama, celebrated the 120 anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Panama with the first presentation of the Kabuki Theater, a traditional Japanese stage art recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO.

That activity, held free of charge at the Theater Festival, was a cultural and educational program that included a demonstration of Kabiki dance without makeup and with simple costumes, a workshop of makeup and costumes with explanations, and the heroic dance of the Lion.

The guest actor, Ukon Onoe, an emerging star in the Kabuki world, was the protagonist of this unusual performance, which combined dance, theater and music with his unique costumes and makeup.

María Eugenia Herrera, Minister of Culture, emphasized that "throughout more than a century our nations have built strong bonds with mutual respect, cultural understanding and cooperation. Japan has been an ally and an invaluable friend to Panama."

He added "today we pay tribute to this profound relationship of friendship, recognizing the roots that both countries have sown in fields such as culture, education and economic development."

"That art should continue to be a tool for strengthening our relations and building bridges among our nations," added Herrera.

For his part Hideo Fukushima, Ambassador of the Republic of Japan to the Republic of Panama, expressed "we are pleased to celebrate these 120 years of friendship among our countries I wish that relations continue to develop in a prosperous and true manner."
