The well-known photographer Gustavo Barrios presented his first photo book entitled La Esmeralda at the stand of the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura) at the International Book Fair 2024. That 156-page work captures the essence and talent of the National Ballet of Panama, showing the work of his outstanding dancers, artisan and choreographer.

The Esmeralda gathers impressive images of prominent figures from the National Ballet of Panama, including Ana Lorena Boyd, Melissa Gaona, Satoko Konishi, Nazario Johnston, Julieta del Castillo, Yahyr Castro, Juan Carlos Costoya and Edgar Santamaria. Through its lens, Barrios not only portrays the skills of these artists but also reveals the dedication and efforts of the team that makes every production possible.

With more than a decade of experience, Barrios shared his vision about this project: "That book not only celebrates members of the National Ballet but also includes girls and youth from academies throughout the country, working under the leadership of national and international teachers. It's a tribute to the beauty and joint efforts that give life to this great art."

The photographer expressed his admiration for his dance: "It's easy to find inspiration in productions that are so rich in characters, dressines and narrative. The Esmeralda, inspired by Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris, with choreographis by Vasily Medvedev and Stanislav Fečo, is a work that offers infinite visual possibilities."

Barrios explained that his approach transcends the capture of specific poses or movements: "What I seek is to explore the different forms and visual language that dancers can put forward, that" visual poetry 'that often remains unrepeatable. "

Gustavo Barrios, affectionately known as "Gus," as well as being a photo specialist in portraits, also creates photographs that combine dance with the movement of fabrics.
