Panama City, May 28, 2026.The Ministry of Culture officially initiated work on the project to restore and value the Plaza de France and the Colonial Wall of Punta Chiriquí, one of the most iconic, visited and representative heritage spaces of the historic architecture of the Casco Antiguo of Panama.

As part of this first phase, during the morning of this Wednesday, a logistics operation was developed for the transport of equipment, machinery and containers necessary for the installation of the construction camp and the start of specialized works of property maintenance.

The actions were previously coordinated with residents, traders and users of the area by the Office of the Casco Antiguo and implemented jointly with the Transit and Ground Transport Authority (ATTT), the Ministry of Public Security and Building Project Manager, S.A. (APORCOSA), a contractor of the project, ensuring an orderly, secure and respectful development of the special conditions of mobility and maintenance of the historic site.

The intervention includes specialized jobs aimed at the architectural, structural and urban restoration of the Plaza de France, the green areas, the hemicycle, the colonial wall and sectors of Paseo Esteban Huertas, respecting international criteria of heritage conservation applicable to historic sites declared World Heritage by the UNESCO.

The actions referred to as part of the project have been designed to restore paving and coverings, to restore architecture and ornamental elements, to adapt urban and landscape, to strengthen structural and to improve areas of movement and property contemplation with a view to preserving and enhancing the historic, cultural and tourist value of this important public space.

The restoration and restoration of Plaza de France and the Colonial Wall of Punta Chiriquí will help to strengthen the conservation of one of the country's most important historic reference points, linked to the Republican memory, the Spanish engineering and the colonial defence system of the old town of Panama. Also, this project will help to consolidate the Casco Antiguo as a living space for cultural encounter, sustainable tourism, heritage and economic development, promoting the responsible enjoyment of historic heritage by residents, national visitors and international tourists.

The colonial wall of La Punta Chiriquí, whose origins date back to the 17th century, forms an essential part of the outstanding universal value recognized by the UNESCO within the World Heritage site, as one of the main remains of the colonial defence system of Panama City.

The National Government, through the Ministry of Culture, confirms its commitment to the protection, conservation and revitalization of Panama's historic heritage by promoting projects that strengthen its cultural identity and preserve its historic memory and create new opportunities for its cultural and tourist development.
