MiCultura Highlights International Mother Language Day

The Ministry of Culture (MiCultura) jointly with the Panamanian Academy of Lingua (APL) presented a day of virtual lectures under the title "Towards the decade of indigenous languages 2022-2032" at which Rito Ismare, Aristides Turpana and Marden Paniza were paid tribute, leading to a legacy in the Panamanian arts.

Aristides Royo, president of the Civil Society and Social Security Organization (APL), called for a united effort to train indigenous teachers and that once their training has been completed they should be distributed to the different regions of the country, so that they can work to strengthen and that the children and youth of our native peoples can be involved with national development and preserve their culture.

Abhencio Palacios, deputy ministers of indigenous affairs of the Ministry of Government, stated that his mother tongue was a living heritage and told them about how his school years referred to them as being prohibited from talking "ngabare" in the living room under the organic law of education and that this was punished in his evaluation.

The teacher's communication with his or her student is very important as part of his or her training process and should require teachers who go to indigenous communities to also learn their mother tongue and his or her mother tongue, and his or her support for Aristides Royo's proposal to create this institutional synergy so that multilingual cultural diversity can be sustainable in his or her development, Palacios emphasized.

In his intervention Carlos Aguilar Navarro, Minister of Culture recalled the date's designation and that since 2000, it invites us to celebrate the ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity that planet earth has. In Panama we have a great range of multicultural representative of all that our panamesnidad composes, so from MiCultura we reaffirm our premise that cultural rights are human rights, from expression and from the enjoyment of artistic manifestations.

It's important to respect that each of the groups that make up his or her own ethnic diversity can do so from his or her own cultural heritage and tradition and from his or her tongue. It's for us that in the future of MiCultura we can edit prints of his or her Spanish and Panamanian authors's and his or her Spanish writers, but they can also be written from every one of these languages that represent his or her cultural diversity, stated the Minister of Culture.

Aguilar Navarro added, that it's very significant this day to highlight his mother's languages but to get more deeply into the formal and general training of Panamanian people that we can get to know and express ourselves from each of the languages of our cultural diversity.
