Panama, April 13, 2026. - The Ministry of Culture, through the National Board of Museums, formalized the start of work for the recovery of the José Domingo Museum of History and Art of Obaldía in the town of David, Chiriquí, after public event for study and design.

The protocolary event was chaired by Raúl Castro Zachrisson, national director of Museums, who supplied the document enabling the conduct of the rehabilitation works at the building located in the Barrio Bolívar of the David District.

That structure was the place where President José Domingo de Obaldía was born and his name was taken. The original building dates from 1834 and was declared a National Historical Monument by Act 37 of 1996.

That structure will be submitted to a restoration process that includes the maintenance of its colonial architecture and the adequacy of its exhibition rooms. The project includes the development of archaeological studies and the implementation of a new museum proposal for the protection and display of its collection, which includes pieces of precolombine archaeology, religious art and objects from the departmental period.

) The technical intervention has as its central goal the re-opening of this complex, which operates as the main repository of the historic memory of Chiriquí. With the surrender of this administrative document, the Ministry of Culture lays down a work schedule for the complete recovery of the building, enabling the re-establishment of this space as a centre for research and cultural tourism after being closed to the public for more than 10 years.
