"To listen so as not to forget: sound as a living heritage"

Panama, August 13, 2025. - Panama holds the eighth meeting of the Intergovernmental Programme Council Ibermemoria Sonora, Photographic and Audiovisualthat starts today Wednesday, August 13th and ends on Friday 15th, where representatives from Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Nicaragua attend.
At his inaugural session, at the Canal Museum Auditorium, his concurrently called "The sound as a living heritage: listening so as to avoid forgetting," which was given as a space to reflect on sound memory as an integral part of our collective identity.
The vice-ministers of culture, Arianne Benedetti, was pleased that Panama was the host of this meeting and recognized that "memories are lost and that's why we are here. It's our turn to work so that, in 150 years, children know how Panama was today."
He added that Panama is rich in its cultural heritage and "we are committed to memory, we are working a law that will ensure that we can safeguard who we are, what Panama is. They count with us, we will work for memories to last in time."
They accompanied his deputy ministers, Jessica Padilla Leiva, Nicaragua's Ambassador to Panama, Héctor Dada and Laura Ruiz of the Ibero-American Secretariat of Culture, Francisco Rivas, president of the Ibermemoria Programme and director of the National Foundary of Mexico and Sheila González, national film director of MiCultura.
On the Ibermemoria Sonora, Photographic and Audiovisual Programme
Mexico, through the National Foundary and SEGIB, introduced the Ibero-American Technical Cooperation Initiative for the Preservation of Sound and Audiovisual Heritage at the XXIII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, Panama, in October 2013. At the XXIV Summit of Veracruz in 2014, its conversion into a Programme of Action was approved.
The general aim is to implement an integrated model for the preservation of sound and audiovisual documents and to give access to that intangible heritage of Ibero-American countries and to promote training and continuous training aimed at knowledge about strategies, tactics and technologies for the preservation of sound and audiovisual heritage for the benefit of all countries of the region.
