Panama City, June 5, 2025 - In the framework of World Environment Day, the Ministry of Culture today participated in the commemorative event organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the report of results 2024 of the United Nations system in Panama was also submitted.

The Minister of Culture, María Eugenia Herrera, was represented by the institution and reaffirmed the commitment of the cultural sector to sustainable development and climate action, from a perspective that recognizes the role of culture as a catalyst for awareness, social transformation and community cohesion.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Multilateral Affairs and International Cooperation, Carlos Guevara Mann, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Panama, Ana Patricia Graça and the representative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Juan Bello. They all emphasized the urgency of strengthening cooperation between the Panamanian State, multilateral agencies and society to face the global environmental crisis and advance to the Sustainable Development Goals.

This year, World Environment Day focuses on the theme "Solutions to Plastic Pollution," under the campaign # SandContamination Porastics. It's a global call to action to reduce the use of single-use plastics and promote sustainable practices, in a context where microplastics have been found even in the most remote ecosystems of the planet.

At the ceremony, the 2024 Performance Report of the United Nations system in Panama was also presented, reflecting the achievements achieved through interagency work and collaboration with more than 70 national partners. The report identifies strategic areas of convergence with the new Government Plan 2025- 2029, opening up a joint agenda with a view to meeting the 2030 Agenda.

The Ministry of Culture welcomes these spaces of articulation and recognizes that the sustainable future that Panama needs is also built from culture: with creativity, citizen participation and shared responsibility.
