The Ministry of Culture of Panama is proud to announce its participation at the 60th Venice Art Biennial, to be held from April 20 to November 24, 2024. That iconic event, recognized as one of the largest and most prestigious contemporary art exhibitions in the world, offers Panama an opportunity to present its artistic talent at the international stage. That ambitious project is made possible by the Organizing Commission of the Panama Pavilion, made up of the Canal Museum, City of Knowledge and the Art and Culture Foundation.
The Minister of Culture, S. E. Giselle González Villarrué, emphasized that: "The Ministry of Culture, as a leading entity of the state with regard to the promotion and protection of cultural expressions, creative processes and Panamanian cultural heritage, welcomes and supports and provides accompaniment to this important artistic activity that offers an excellent opportunity for Panama to participate in this, the largest and most prestigious contemporary art showcase worldwide."
For the first time in its history, Panama will have its own pavilion at the Venice Art Biennial, highlighting the diversity and wealth of its artistic scene. The artists selected to represent Panama on this global stage are Brooke Alfaro, Cisco Merel, Giana De Dier and Isabel De Obaldia, whose works capture the essence and creativity that characterize contemporary Panamanian art.
The artists were selected by a Curatorial Team, with Ana Elizabeth González, Mónica Kupfer and Luz Bonadies, who built their criteria on the artistic path and production of works related to the curatorial approach and thematic.
The police officer for this participation is Itzela Quiros, National Director of Museums at the Ministry of Culture, who has worked tirelessly to conduct this significant project. The office will be run by Ana Elizabeth González, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Canal Museum, with Mónica Kupfer, Curador and Historiador del Arte and Director of the Foundation Art and Culture, leading those who make up the exhibition team: Roman Flórez and Mirielle Robles.
"The 60th Venice Art Biennial, under the care of Adriano Pedrosa and the theme" Stranieri ovanvil "[Extranieri ovil], offers Panama a unique opportunity to highlight our rich cultural history. Panama's participation marks a milestone in our cultural narrative, as our pavilion deeply reflect the theme of the bienaria: Panama, from its first as an isthma, has been modelled by the arrival and passage of people, and our pavilion resounds as an echo of the enduring prints that leave migration at people and in its surroundings, we are excited to put into an international and play with our leading and leading artists at an international level with our international talent." remarked Ana Elizabeth González.
The curator Mónica Kupfer stated that: "The first national pavilion of Panama at the highly renowned Venice Biennial represents a first step in what should become a tradition: our country's presence in one of the most significant scenarios of contemporary world art. We will be represented by four recognized artists: Brooke Alfaro and Isabel De Obaldia, established figures with careers of more than forty years old and with Cisco Merel and Giana Dier, more young and medium-run creators, who have already put their mark on national art. His works fulfill the theme of the 60th Venice Biennial in different ways, in paintings, collages, and sculptures and a valuable architecture.".
Luz Bonates has been appointed as Project Manager, ensuring effective co-ordination and success of Panama's participation at the Biennial, while Mariana Núñez will play a crucial role as Graphic Director, guaranteeing an visually shocking presentation.
The Venice Biennial provides Panama with a unique platform to highlight its vibrant international artistic ecosystem. Participation at this event not only allows for an exposure of our artistic talent but also opens the gates of the world to the cultural wealth that characterizes Panama.
