Highlights of inputs from indigenous peoples

Panama, 9 August 2020.On International Day of Indigenous Peoples, the National Government, through the Ministry of Culture, emphasizes the valuable contribution of the ethnic groups to the shaping of the Panamanian nation.

The Minister of Culture, Carlos Aguilar Navarro, stated that at these moments of great challenges to the Cod-19 pandemic, indigenous peoples throughout the country have come together to face all challenges united in this difficult situation that we have been through with all Panamanian and Panamanian peoples.

"To the seven indigenous peoples: naso- tjerdi, guna, bribri, buglé, Wounaan, ngäbe and emberá, our message of encouragement on this day established by the Organization of the United Nations is to share and sensitised to the whole Panamanian population about their values, rights and wealth of cultural heritage contained in their languages, their knowledge of medicinal plants and biodiversity, their crafts, music and ritual dances," said Minister Aguilar Navarro.

For his part, the Vice-Minister of Culture, Gabriel González, emphasized that the theme of this year's commemoration is "Covid-19 and the resilience of indigenous peoples," very currently at a difficult time of celebration and so shared the encouragement and commitment of close work as a national Government to support our indigenous peoples.
