"We can only build the future if we know the past and we work today with the necessary tools to advance as a society," stated the Minister of Culture, Giselle González Villarrué, at an interactive dialogue about Afro-descendants in the development of the American and Caribbean nations that was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
That dialogue was held in commemoration of the "International Day of Afro-descendants" that was adopted by the United Nations on December 16, 2020 with representatives of the Afro-descendant community of Panama and agencies such as the UN and the Organization of American States (OAS).
González Villarrué argued that the institution in the formulation of the National Cultural Plan includes "spaces such as that of the Royal Customs of Portobelo, that today gives life to the Afro-Panamanian memory museum, where there was consultation and participation of Afro-Panamanian people in the processes and adaptation of the rooms"
He also referred to the recovery of other public spaces such as the Abel Bravo Cultural Centre and the project to update the inventory of the intangible cultural heritage, among others
In his welcome message, Minister González Villarrué referred to the implementation of technical assistance for research and safeguard of African American cultures with the SICA and Cuba region with support from Crespial and UNESCO.
In the framework of this celebration, the incumbent of Culture recalled actions such as how to get UNESCO's recognition of the rituals and festive expressions of congo culture and that a strong percentage of the registration of the Dances and Expressions associated with Corpus Christi be of Afro-Panamanian.
At this date, we have to highlight Panamanian fighters from the Afro-descendant community who have been unbeatable to achieve rights and "continue to show us the way, to be attentive as Alberto Barrow, at the Panama Afro Observatory Dr. George Presley," said González Villarrué.
The event was attended by Aberto Brunori, a high Commissioner for Human Rights and Reubén Farje, an OAS representative and his deputy ministers with responsibility for foreign relations, Jones Cooper and others.
