National Government Continues Repatriation of Archaeological Pieces

At a protocolary event at the Chancellery of the Republic of Panama, a formal surrender of two archaeological pieces from the Luigui Pigorini museum of Italy to the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura) was made.

He responded to Gabriel González, his Vice Minister of Culture, and signed his report of his receipt by Erika Mouynes, his Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The archaeological pieces, from Italy and identified by the Museo de la Civilization of Rome, were verified by the technical team of the national leadership of Cultural Heritage and found to be original pieces of the archaeological region of Gran Coclé and as part of the Panamanian cultural heritage.

The technical staff of the Ministry of Culture verified these pieces by informing them that they are in good condition and their description corresponds to, with a polychroma long necks with geometric design and the other is a monocroma vessel with an eroded globular face.

Erika Mouynes, Minister for Foreign Affairs, remarked "that we are expecting the recovery and repatriation of more pieces from the countries of the United States, Colombia, Norway and Mexico and that with this exercise we have thus regained our legacy and culture that we are all about."

The importance of the recovery of these archaeological pieces is that they have shown the existence of three great spheres of social interaction with their own cultural traditions, called Gran Chiriquí, Gran Coclé and Gran Darién where their inhabitants used pottery as means with meanings.

MiCultura through its national Cultural Heritage management, it's up to them to be a permanent custodian of these cultural goods that will be part of the collection of the Reina Torres de Araúz Anthropological Museum.
