MiCultura will join the International Day of Monuments and Historic Sites.

Panama 18 April 2020. The Ministry of Culture invites us to share with our visual and virtual experiences the celebration of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, held on 18 April each year.
That year's commemoration of the date has as its theme: "Shared Cultures, Shared Heritage, Shared Responsibility," and refers to cultural heritage in a wider context than cultural identity and leads it to the network of relations, communications, exchanges, dialogues and conflicts that gave rise to them.
In that regard, his Minister of Culture, Carlos Aguilar Navarro, emphasized the importance of the date to be celebrated and stated that the global heritage is our shared responsibility, and that we have been with the world from that first globalization to the present.
He added that this climate, as a result of the Covio 19 pandemic, is a great opportunity to reflect, be supportive and support those most in need, including the recordments of World Heritage sites where thousands of Panamanians reside.
The "fortifications of the Caribbean coast of Panama: Portobelo and San Lorenzo," the "archaeological site of Old Panama and the historic District of Panama," as well as fortified ports, historic centers and archaeological sites that precisely guarded the passage of passengers and goods through sea and ground routes in a vast network of exchanges, are part of our heritage.
The International Day of Monuments and Sites was established by the UNESCO at its 1983 General Assembly with the proposal put forward to that end by the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).
Katti OSorio, National Director of Historical Heritage of MiCultura, explained that the goal of this date's annual celebration was to publicize the importance of human cultural heritage and its diversity and vulnerability and to disseminate the needs for its protection and conservation.
"That year, we highlight the recognition of heritage, be they places, landscapes, practices or collections and its frequent connection and valuation by multiple and diverse groups and communities," OSorio stated.
