Panama, August 10, 2026. To gain an understanding of the conservation needs of Nata's Minor Basilica and to advance actions with a view to its success, the Ministry of Culture held a meeting with representatives of the religious community, civil society, local authorities and actors related to the protection of historic heritage.

During the day, the main concerns related to a future intervention of this building, considered as one of the main references of the historic and religious heritage of the country, have been addressed as part of its process to an eventual recognition as a Pontificia Basilica.

The Ministry of Culture and Minister María Eugenia Herrera have put forward a multidisciplinary monitoring procedure to conduct an integrated analysis of the current conditions of construction and to determine technical needs for its conservation.

The initial tour was accompanied by the architect and restaurant Itzela Quiroz and the master's degree, Yamilith Stanziola, who, with the work team of the Ministry of Culture, conduct an initial assessment with a view to identifying actions to be considered for the maintenance and valuation of the property.

The Church of Natah, dedicated to the Apostle Santiago, is recognized for its antiquity and permanence as a place of worship. It's considered to be one of the oldest churches of America that continues to be used and was declared a National Historical Monument by Act 68 of 1941.

The Ministry of Culture will continue to coordinate with the authorities, the religious community and the different actors related to the protection of the heritage as part of its actions to preserve this important historic and cultural legacy of Natah de los Knights and Panama.
