Panama, December 2, 2025. - On December 5 and 6, the town of Colón will witness a party that relives one of the best-loved rhythms in Panama: Calipso. For two days, at Colón's Center of Arts and Culture (CACCO), the Realeza del Calipso Festival will be held. Friday 5 from 2 p.m. and Saturday 6 from 10: 30 a.m..

To pay tribute to the great exponents of this genus "Realezas del Calipso" (Realezas del Calipso) is an initiative dedicated to the revitalization of the most iconic musical genre in Central America and the Caribbean that aims to re-place calipso in the global cultural market, ensuring its relevance and continuity throughout time.

During these two days, lectures, workshops and dialogues will be held, films will be exhibited and of course there will be a regional music exchange with a concert. The lectures will discuss discography at the Spanish calpso and the new generation of the genre.

On Friday we have scheduled the event "Calipso: Culture, Identity and Pride" and to close the day we will display the documentary "A Night of Calipso," by director Fernando Muñoz, who was winner of the contest Fondo Cine 2016 in the category of Post production.

That tape speaks about members of the group "Friendship," one of the last active gangs of Panamanian calipso that come together to give an unforgettable concert. Through their presentations, essays and interviews, we can tell the story of calipso in Panama, its roots, evolution and profound political, social and historic significance.

On Saturday 6 starts with a music exchange workshop between Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica, closing the day with a band concert from 3 countries: Creole Group, Diggers descendant Calipso Band and Kawe Calipso.

The calipso was born in Trinidad and Tobago in the mid-19th century as an Afro-Caribbean musical tradition with roots in Kaiso music from West Africa. It came up among slaves as a form of communication and social expression, evolving into a distinctive musical genre from the Caribbean region.
