Panama, May 2, 2025 - The Government of the Republic of Panama moved the iconic "Flag Herida," symbol of the separatist gesture of 1903, to the National Institute for Cultural Heritage in Madrid, Spain, where it will be restored as part of a joint action to preserve the historic memory of the nation.

 

The shuttle operation will be conducted in two phases starting with the last, 30 April, from the Herrera Museum "Fabio Rodriguez" to a reserve area where it will be technically stabilized for a month. On 26 May the flag will leave Tocumen International Airport, with its destination to Madrid, where it will stay during an estimated restoration process of 18 months.

 

The Wound Flag, made with the inverted colors of the national pavilion, was built into the cordments of Chitre, Monagrillo and La Arena during the acts that proclaiming the separation of Panama from Colombia. Her name comes from a bullet mark, testimony to the moments of fervor experienced in the separatist gesture.

 

It should be noted that this restoration takes place under an international cooperation agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of Panama, and reaffirms the cultural and diplomatic links between both nations. Similarly, we have the valuable support of the private company, which has been instrumental in facilitating air transport, the recruitment of the "Clavio to Clavio" and an essential part of logistics.

 

The move will be run under international maintenance standards with specialized packaging, vehicles certified for the transport of cultural goods and the participation of trained technical personnel.

 

The project is supported by the National Commission of Patriotic Symbols (CONASIN), the Ministry of Government, the National Library and other cultural and academic entities of the country.

 

The custody is exercised by the State Security Stations: National Police, National Aeronautical Service (SENAN), National Border Service (SENAFRONT), Benemérit Fire Corps and the Transit and Ground Transport Authority.

 

During the first journey between Herrera and the capital, each station on the path paid tribute to this patrio symbol as an act of respect and living memory. The journey, about four hours, was conducted without interruption, at a controlled speed of 80 km / h due to the delicate maintenance status of the piece.

 

"To preserve our history is to protect the soul of the nation," stated the Minister of Culture, María Eugenia Herrera and emphasized that "this restoration is a sign of the commitment of the State and Panamanian society to preserve the heritage that defines us as a people that care for and preserves its heritage for future generations."
