Panama, April 1, 2025 - The Museum of Colonial Religious Art, one of the most popular in the country with more than 30 thousand visitors a year, will be relocated in two rooms of the Government Palace, former headquarters of the Government Ministry, at the Casco Antiguo of Panama City.

The museum, with a valuable collection of about 73 pieces from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, worked for 50 years at the old Santo Domingo chapel of Guzmán, an 18th-century Baroque jewel restored in 1974, and will return to its original vocation as an orphanage.

At the instruction of the Minister of Culture, María Eugenia Herrera, the national director of Museums, Raúl Castro Zachrisson, co-ordinates this initiative, which includes the maintenance of 33 colonial canvases that have been moved to the restoration workshops of the City of The Arts for its preservation.

Director Castro clarified that the Santo Domingo chapel of Guzmán will be given to the Friends Churches Casco Antiguo (CAICA) Committee, to be part of the traditional "Seven Churches" route during Holy Week. The Ministry of Culture reaffirms its commitment to the preservation and promotion of the religious and colonial heritage of the country, ensuring that the Museum of Colonial Religious Art remains a cultural reference for Panamanian people.
