Panama March 19, 2025. - with the interest of the National Government to invest in the value of the town of Colón, the Ministry of Culture through its National Cultural Heritage Directorate in conjunction with the office of the historic centre of the town of Colón held the first meeting of the work table aimed at establishing a strategic line for planning a project of social, cultural and economic rehabilitation of the urban fabric of the city.

That initiative aims at regaining the splendor of the city, while attending to its historic monuments and public spaces.

The meeting was attended by key actors, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Colón Technical Board, the Viceministerium of Housing and Territorial Management, the Coordination Unit of the Ministry of Public Works, the Secretariat of Goals (with responsibility for car mobility in the town), Colón Puerto Libre, members of Colón's SENADIS, Colón's Mayor's Office and other community representatives.

During his session, Samileth Stanziola, National Director of Cultural Heritage, emphasized that this first table served as a diagnosis of the city's needs, addressed from different perspectives. It aims to generate a strategic line with short-, mid- and long-term actions that will give rise to an integral process of revitalization with the collaboration of the different state institutions.

The international specialist for urban projects, Juan Herreros, emphasized that Colón has an enormous potential to develop a model project for transformation and modernisation. According to Herreros, this first meeting has been crucial to collecting both personal and professional ideas and experiences from different participants, generating a valuable material for the development of the strategic plan.

The expert also emphasized the need to define a list of concrete actions to carry out this ambitious project.

He emphasized that any planning should have a sound social, political and legal framework that will secure the public and strengthen the historic and cultural identity of the city, ensuring that its transformation respects its values and roots.

With this first step, they lay the foundations for an integral rehabilitation of Colón, reaffirming the commitment of the National Government and the institutions involved to restore to Colón its historic splendor and economic and social dynamism.
