On his way to achieving recognition of Panama's Transitory Colonial Route (RCTP) as the UNESCO's World Heritage, this body recognized through ICOMOS that Panama has been able to prove two of the three criteria put forward by Panama.

Panama, through the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura), submitted to the UNESCO in 2023 the necessary documentation to support RCTP as a World Heritage Site.

The ICOMOS assessment report, related to the Panamanian proposal, has been very positive and believes that "the proposed mass good meets cultural criteria (ii) and (iv)."

According to the practice guidelines of the 1972 Convention, the recognition of a single criterion was necessary to achieve the registration of an asset on the World Heritage List and, moreover, felt that the authenticity and integrity of each component and of the path had been achieved as a whole.

At the Panamanian cultural level, there was optimism as this draft decision was very positive, as the Committee had requested the Panamanian State to care for minor recommendations that could be met by Panama before and at the forty-sixth meeting of the World Heritage Committee to be held from 21 to 31 July in New Delhi, India.

The goal for the country is to achieve that registration of a new property on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List will be achieved this year.

The RCTP includes its phase I, San Lorenzo Castle, Cruces Way, Old Panama Archaeological Site and Panama City Casco Antiguo, while phase II includes the fortifications of Portobelo and the Royal Way.
