To the benefit of people with visual disabilities, the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura) gave to the National Library Ernesto J. Castillero certification and accreditation as an authorized entity to provide the beneficiaries of the Treaty of Marrakech with education, training, adapted reading and access to information through works produced or adapted in an accessible format to persons with disabilities.
He responded to the Minister of Culture, Giselle González Villarrué and to the president of the Fundación Pro Biblioteca Nacional Fernando Sucre Miguez to conduct an event that recognizes this state entity with responsibility for the conservation, preservation and dissemination of the bibliographic and documentary heritage of the nation.
"We are proud to realize today this recognition and become the second institution of the country to be accredited under the treaty of Marrakech. That's without a doubt puts us at the forefront to help people with visual difficulties," Sucre said.
He added, that "we will continue with the next step to give them access to all those people that we normally forget that, because of their limited conditions, we do not consider them at our day after day. That's why this step we are giving is very important, because we give more citizens access to this place, that's the memory of the nation."
Meanwhile, the incumbent of Culture, González Villarrué emphasized that "it's not just signing but performing the commitment as a state with the aim of transforming the country and so this is an act of human right and accessibility, that offers opportunities and space to people with disabilities."
"The ideal thing is that we have a network of institutions authorized to give people with disabilities a space, to bring the treaty to a good reality, to an equal opportunity for people with disabilities," emphasized González Villarrué.
The Treaty of Marrakech, ratified by our country by Act 9 of 12 April 2016, aims to put more books, magazines and other printed materials available to people with visual difficulties and who have access to printed texts and that cover the needs of persons with disabilities, including persons with disabilities.
That's the second entity accredited by MiCultura, through the addresses of Copyright and Equal Opportunities, ratifying the right to read and fulfill democratic access to cultural life to books and knowledge.
