For more than a decade, residents of Casco Antiguo and surrounding areas have been benefiting from programs such as Sabores del Barrio, Mercadito Artesanal (crafts fairs) and Escuela Taller Panama, all run by the office of Casco Antiguo (OCA) at the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura).
According to data provided by the OCA from 2021 to 2023 96 crafts fairs have been organized with the participation of 470 artisan, while with the Casco Antiguo's Taste / Chef de Pailas Program, more than B /. 177.183.50 have been generated in income, thanks to cultural employment.
Based on this, the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura), through the office of the Casco Antiguo (OCA), re-launched its sociocultural programs and flagship projects with its motto "a new opportunity," with a view to presenting the achievements achieved during its launch and highlighting their contents for exhibitors and national and foreign visitors who participate and take advantage of this cultural offer.
The re-launch of this campaign was represented by the testimony of Crucito Adames from the program Sabores del Barrio, Vielka Acosta from the group of artisan from the Mercadito Artesanal and Emilio Rose, released from the first generation of the Escuela Workshop Panama, as reflected in the documentary "A new opportunity" produced by José Luis Rodriguez, UNDP consultant and will be broadcast by the screens of SERTV.
The Minister of Culture stated that "these three stories are an identity sign, a sign of pride and passion for what its protagonists do," and that they have an important role to play in this type of program for culture.
The partnership between the Government and the MiCultura and the San Felipe Communal Board, the United Nations Programme (UNDP), the Kingdom of Spain and the Spanish Cooperation Agency was highlighted with a view to reactivating the Panama Workshop School, which will provide training to young people from 16 to 25 years of age in areas such as food production, digital production, welding, hardware, tourist and heritage guide, carpentry, electricity, plumbing and cultural landscape.
Additional, the authorities present, artisans, entrepreneurs, media and public at large have been able to enjoy a sample of what includes the programs Sabores del Barrio and Mercadito Artesanal with a tasting of different traditional Panamanian plates as well as desserts such as scrape, crazy ice, fruit smoothies and an exhibition of crafts.
The collection of Sabino Durango Folkloric Projections, made up of older dancers, who delight them with congo dances, was part of the cultural program of this relaunch.
