The experiences of Afro-Caribbean migrants in the segregated canyon and in Panama at the beginning of the 20th century, using collage technologies, are part of the proposal of Afro-Panamanian artist Giana de Dier, who was selected for an artistic residence in London from June to August 2023.
The residence has been supported by the Latin American and Caribbean Network of the Delfina Foundation and with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama under the management of the Embassy of Panama in the UK and the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura).
On this occasion, the Delfina Foundation of London, together with the Panamanian De Dier, was also selected Gabriel Rodriguez Pellestar from Guatemala, both for the quality of his proposals and his outstanding artistic trajectories.
According to De Dier, his works show the sociability of Caribbean black women in Panama and their potential narrative while attesting to the challenges and resilience stories of people whose experiences have been historically invisibilized.
Through residences, collaborations and public programs, Delfina Foundation in London, a private non-profit organization, promotes artistic interaction and the growth of creative practices.
That's the first time they have been co-operative with a Central American country with an explicit call for this region through Mac Panama and that's also the first time a Panamanian artist has been given a place in the program of artistic residences of this Spanish Foundation.
With this residence, the Panamanian will have a valuable time to conduct its work and will participate in a program that includes guided tours to museums, galleries, non-profit organisations, spaces and studies run by artists.
He will also conduct trips to institutions outside of London, which will give him an opportunity to get to know and interact with artists, curators, galleries, mecenas, academics and researchers through visits to studies, events and professional development activities such as critiques, folder reviews and mentoring activities, access to collections and archives and strategic introduction.
Under this concept, the Panama Embassy in London and the Delfina Foundation in London organized a welcome reception on 4 July with members of the diplomatic corps in London and with key personalities from the art environment of London and the UK.
About Giana De Dier
He studied visual arts at the University of Panama. He has exhibited his work at the Salone Degli Incanti and Gallerie Delle Prigioni in Italy, the Art Gallery of the Association of Employees of the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) in Washington, SMV Gallery in New York, the Panama Museum of Contemporary Art and the 58va.
