A Cultural Cooperation Convention with the aim of coordinating technical actions for the promotion, development, implementation and implementation of the Programme called "Alliance of Indigenous Peoples for Rights and Development" was signed between the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura) and The Indigenous Foundation FSC.
The convention was signed by the Minister of Culture, (MiCultura) Giselle González Villarrué and the Special Rapporteur of the Indigenous Foundation FSC, Francisco Kennedy Araújo de Souza.
The activities undertaken under the convention are intended to organize and convene a capacity-building programme for indigenous peoples & apos; organizations and to promote an enabling environment for the recognition, effective participation and joint decision-making of indigenous peoples in matters affecting them.
They are also aimed at promoting the sustainable development of indigenous peoples based on self-determined economic models and at working together to safeguard the traditional knowledge and cultural expressions of Panama's indigenous peoples and to restore their holy sites, archaeological objects, historic archives and monuments, among other purposes.
The aim was to promote joint projects that would contribute to improving and enriching the tasks of each institution and to conduct consultations and projects, according to the nature of the mutually agreed Programme, especially by supporting the implementation of the Plan for the Economic Empowerment of Panama's Women (PEMIP 2025) and for the empowerment of Panama's indigenous women in the rescue of their ancestral culture and knowledge.
The exchange of experiences, documents, information and knowledge to achieve the development of programmes, plans and projects undertaken by the parties to the convention through the conduct of courses, workshops, seminars and exchange programmes with a special focus on the issue of Panama's indigenous peoples and culture.
The convention lays down that MiCultura undertakes as far as its potential, to provide FSC-IF with the logistics and technical and institutional cooperation necessary for the development and implementation of projects, plans, programmes and activities as well as to coordinate with the Directorates and Departments of the Ministry with any necessary support or exchange to achieve the activities to be undertaken.
Meanwhile, FSC-IF undertakes, among other actions, to assist, guide and support the human and technical team of MiCultura, as required for the fulfilment of the aims of the Convention and to provide continuous specialist advice with respect to indigenous peoples, forest management and especially with regard to the issues described in the first clause of the objectives of this Convention.
