With ancestral dances MiCultura celebrates the months of indigenous peoples

In celebration of the Day of Indigenous Peoples, the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura) held a meeting with the participation of native groups and students at the National School of Dance and Fine Arts at the University of Panama.
That activity, which also takes place at the celebration of the Bicentennial of Panama's Independence of Spain, forms part of MiCultura's commitment throughout August to the rights of its native peoples.
Forums about youth, women, earth and nature, a poetic recital, virtual photo exhibitions, artisan festivals presenting dances and design of traditional and contemporary fashions, among other things, are part of the activities that have been organized as part of the meeting of indigenous peoples.
Yigo Sugasti of the Cultural Rights and Citizenship Section of MiCultura, an instance that participated actively in the meeting, expressed his view that "activity forms part of the proposal that is studied to select August to dedicated it to indigenous peoples."
One of the initiatives referred to was "Panama Poliglota," which focused on a Multilinguistic Panama, with an inter-institutional effort that sought to promote an extension of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples and as an advance at the beginning of the 2022- 2032 Decade of Indigenous Languages.
According to Ema Gómez, representing the Intangible Heritage Board, "with this proposal we seek to promote our ancestral roots, to spread the learning of Panamanian indigenous languages, their publications and mechanisms to be included in information texts, in museums and in sign boards, that is to say in all general information."
At this meeting there were presentations of dances representing the different indigenous peoples as: El Guerrero, Colebreí, Borracho, Murcibat and Gusano by the Uraba group of the Ngabe Bugle ethnicity; The Sobia group of the people Emberá shown the dance of chimbombom and cumbia embera and the National School of Dances of the Ministry of Culture with choreographies of Iguandili López and Diwar Sapi and students at the University of Panama's School of Fine Arts.
